Arriving by Bus

Greyhound has buses to Boston from all major cities in North America. Besides its main location at South Station, Greyhound has suburban terminals in Newton and Framingham. Peter Pan Bus Lines connects Boston with cities elsewhere in Southern New England, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland.

Concord Coach runs buses between Boston and several cities in New Hampshire and Maine. C&J sends buses up the New Hampshire coast to Newburyport, Massachusetts; Dover, New Hampshire; Durham, New Hampshire; and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Concord and C&J both leave from South Station (which is connected to the Amtrak station) and Logan Airport. BoltBus offers cheap fares in well-kept buses between Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. (express service between Boston and New York City is also available). Megabus also offers low fares, and serves New York City and points south along the East Coast. Both companies leave from South Station.

If you want to travel in style, the LimoLiner provides luxury bus service (with television, movies, high-speed Internet, and food-and-drink service) between Boston's Hilton Back Bay and Manhattan's Hilton New York for $89 each way. This service is open to the general public, not just guests of the Hilton. Reservations are a good idea.

Fares and schedules for all buses except LimoLiner are posted at South Station, at many of the tourist kiosks, and online. Major bus lines now offer Wi-Fi service at no charge. You can usually purchase your tickets online, and major credit cards are accepted for all buses.

Getting Around By Bus

Buses of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) crisscross the metropolitan area and travel farther into suburbia than the subway and trolley lines. Most bus routes run from 5:30 am to 12:30 am.

CharlieCards (prepaid stored-value fare cards) are sold at all subway terminals from ticket agents, who are generally there from 7 am to 7 pm. The hard-plastic cards can be purchased with cash or with debit or credit cards. To pay the bus fare, tap your pass on the fare plate when you enter.

Fares within the city are $2.65 if paying in cash, or $2.10 if paying with a prepurchased CharlieCard; fares are higher for longer suburban lines. Fare machines accept paper currency but do not return change.
