TRAVEL TIPS

Bus Travel

Intercape Mainliner is the main option for Western Cape destinations; Greyhound, Translux/City-to-City, and Baz Bus (popular with backpackers) also provide service. Common routes from Cape Town include Johannesburg and Tshwane, Springbok, Windhoek, George, Port Elizabeth, and Durban. All the main bus companies operate from the bus terminal alongside the central train station on Adderley Street, and most have their offices there.

Within Cape Town, MyCiti bus service now serves the entire city, including the Cape Flats. Buses run at regular 10-minute intervals during peak period (5 am–9 am) and at 20-minute intervals for the rest of the day. The service is perfect for tourists because you can catch a bus into town—a short ride—and from there walk the entire city. Or you can catch a connecting bus almost anywhere, including Hout Bay, the Waterfront, and Blouberg Beach. Only prepaid cards are accepted for MyCiti (get these at kiosks in every station and at some retailers). Timetables are found at each stop and can be scanned for easy reference. These buses run until late in the evening and at R90 provide the cheapest way to get to and from the airport.
